Two correctional officers have been hurt during an incident at a Melbourne women's prison.

9NEWS understands the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre at Ravenhall on the city's outskirts is in lockdown.

Ambulance Victoria has confirmed two people have been taken to hospital in a stable condition after the incident occurred not long after 11am.

The centre accomodates female prisoners of all security ratings.

"The safety and security of staff is our highest priority and we take any assault or allegation of assault on staff very seriously," a Corrections Victoria spokesman said.

Police and Corrections are investigating the incident.
