Two NSW residents confirmed to have Zika virus after visiting the Caribbean

Public health authorities say there have been two confirmed cases of Zika virus infections detected in NSW.

Both were people who had recently travelled in the Caribbean and were detected by NSW Health authorities on Friday.

“It is very unlikely that Zika virus will establish local transmission in NSW as the mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) that spread the infection are not established here – although they are found in some parts of north Queensland,” a NSW Health statement said.

There is no vaccine against Zika virus.

In 2014, four cases of Zika virus infection were diagnosed in NSW in people who had recently travelled from Cook Islands. In 2015, there was one additional case diagnosed in NSW in a returned traveller from Solomon Islands.
