Two men who managed to evade police during an alleged high-speed chase in Sydney's southwest were caught after smashing into a house moments later.

Police allegedly pursued a speeding Holden Commodore sedan at speeds of up to 150km/h from St Helen's Park to Rosemeadow before the sedan drove onto a grass reserve, forcing officers to call off the chase.

The men in the car were in the clear - until police got a call a short time later.

A resident of Glen Alpine reported a Holden Commodore sedan had just crashed into a home on Englorie Park Drive.

Quickly attending the scene, officers arrested one man, but the alleged driver managed to give them the slip a second time and fled on foot.

However, he did not get far before a member of the public tackled him and held him until police arrived.

The two arrested men, aged 21 and 24, were taken to Liverpool Hospital and remain there now under police guard.

Charges are expected to be laid today.
