Turnbull stands by renewables amid attack

Malcolm Turnbull has released a video backing the government's energy policy, in the wake of Tony Abbott outlining what he calls the "policy-driven disaster" of renewable power.

Mr Abbott used a speech and an interview on Sky on Thursday to criticise the government's direction, saying the renewable energy target should be called the "unreliable energy target".

Mr Turnbull says in the video, posted on his Facebook site, Australia needs a coordinated plan between all levels of government to avoid South Australia's problem of having "the most expensive and least reliable electricity".

He said his government was taking action to make power more affordable and reliable, while reducing carbon emissions, in a way "driven by jobs, engineering and economics, not politics".

"All forms of generation have a role to play as we ensure affordable, reliable and lower emission electricity for all Australians," he says.

Speaking on 3AW radio, Mr Turnbull ruled out reviewing the renewable energy target.

He said the target was reviewed and re-legislated under the Abbott government 18 months ago and at the time Mr Abbott had said it restored certainty for investors.

"Nothing would damage our reputation, or undermine jobs and investment more than if we were to produce more uncertainty," Mr Turnbull said.

"It is set. We've got to maintain our reputation as a steady adult government. That is the leadership I give."
