PM Malcolm Turnbull's popularity on the slide: poll

The honeymoon appears well and truly over for Malcolm Turnbull with voter confidence in the prime minister hitting a five-month low, according to the latest Newspoll.

The poll, published in The Australian on Tuesday, shows satisfaction with Mr Turnbull's performance has slumped to 44 per cent, a fall of four points in the past fortnight and 16 points since his peak in mid-November.

Dissatisfaction with the prime minister jumped to 41 per cent, a rise of three points since the last poll a fortnight ago.

In two party-preferred terms, the Coalition remains deadlocked with Labor at 50-50.

In primary terms, the figures remain unchanged since the last poll, with the Coalition on 43 per cent compared to Labor's 35.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's satisfaction rating lifted for the third consecutive time, now sitting at 30 per cent, where it was before Mr Turnbull toppled Tony Abbott.

Despite the jump Mr Turnbull remains the preferred prime minister, 55 per cent to Mr Shorten's 21.
