Voters from across the political divide reckon Malcolm Turnbull's coalition government is better than the one Tony Abbott led for two years.

More than a quarter of people surveyed in the latest Essential poll rated the current government the best of the last 10 years.

But it was Kevin Rudd who took out the title, with 32 per cent rating his first term as the best since John Howard.

Even Julia Gillard's Labor government was preferred over Mr Abbott's government, which ranked the worst by a majority of voters.

On a head-to-head basis, 61 per cent of respondents rated Mr Turnbull ahead of his predecessor.

Liberal-National voters, as well as Labor and Greens supporters, all favoured Mr Turnbull over Mr Abbott.

Meanwhile, Labor maintained its 53-47 two-party lead over the coalition from last week.
