Turnbull becomes first former PM to be granted taxpayer-funded overseas travel

Malcolm Turnbull has been granted taxpayer-funded overseas travel, an entitlement not offered to other former prime ministers.

But Mr Turnbull has distanced himself from the offer, saying he didn't ask for it.

While he's twice represented the government at United Nations events, at the request of Canberra during his privately-funded stay in New York, he says he won't ask to be reimbursed.

He and wife Lucy have been in the Big Apple, staying at the apartment, near Central Park, since shortly after he was dumped as prime minister.

Previous prime ministers have also received international travel perks, but only after being invited by the government for events relating to their time as leader.

The Prime Minister may also approve travel for a spouse, or partner, if requested.

Scott Morrison's office said he had simply formalised what had been an "informal" arrangement.
