The gunman who opened fire in a daylight shooting on a suburban Sydney street hid behind a car door while carrying out the attack.

CCTV shows a man sheltering behind the back door of a dark SUV before firing a number of shots at 37-year-old Mohammed Saab.

The father-of three was found bleeding outside a home on Knoll Avenue in Turella, the city's south-west, with several gunshot wounds.

Mr Saab had gunshot wounds to his torso and legs and was rushed to St George Hospital in a serious condition.

A dark sedan was spotted driving from the scene just after the shooting.

Chief Inspector Chris Hill described the incident as a targeted attack.

He said other people had been in nearby houses at the time, and they rushed to the street when they heard multiple shots being fired.

"Investigators are working to identify those responsible and bring them before the court," he said.

Mr Saab underwent surgery in hospital last night.

Anyone who was in the area or who has information is urged to come forward.
