A three-year-old girl is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, after being found inside a hot car on the NSW Central Coast this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a home in Tuggerawong just after 1pm, after the young girl was reported missing.

It is understood the young girl was missing for over two hours after she escaped through an open window.

Neighbour Robert Olesen said there was a frantic search due to the house being across the road from Tuggerah Lake.

“Everyone was thinking the worst, with a lot of water around, you don’t know where she is,” Mr Olesen told 9News.

A police officer assisting in the search located the unconscious girl who is believed to have accidentally locked herself in a car that was sparked at the property.

Paramedics said with today's temperatures, the car may have reached a sweltering 50 degrees while the young girl was inside it.

She was treated for heat exhaustion at the location before being transferred to Wyong Hospital, where her condition has since improved.

Family members are currently assisting police with their investigation of the incident.
