Trump to attend APEC in PNG: report

US President Donald Trump has confirmed his attendance at a regional leaders summit in Port Moresby at the end of the year, it has been reported.

The Papua New Guinean capital is hosting 21 leaders from Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation member countries, including Australia, for meetings in mid-November.

The White House has confirmed Mr Trump's attendance, the PNG Post Courier reports.

In a separate letter, Mr Trump expressed condolences to PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill following February's deadly earthquake in the Highlands region which killed more than 100 people.

Australia will help PNG with the summit's logistics and security arrangements and will chip in about a third of the cost.

Last year, the Turnbull government allocated $48 million in funding to extend the presence of 73 federal police officers in PNG until after the November summit.
