Truckie who crashed into bridge while drunk disqualified and fined

A truck driver who allegedly crashed his vehicle into a bridge while drunk and fled has received an $1800 fine.

Neil Fretwell, 32, was under the influence and driving while suspended when his rental truck crashed into a bridge in Ultimo in Sydney on April 24.

The truck rolled and became wedged under the Bulwara Road bridge but when police arrived, the driver was nowhere to be found.

Mr Fretwell was arrested in a nearby house and today convicted of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a crash, driving while suspended and driving an over-height vehicle.

Mr Fretwell received a 10-month disqualification, 100 hours of community service and an $1800 fine.

Staff at Balmain Rentals, where Mr Fretwell hired the truck, earlier told 9NEWS he had provided a licence but had not disclosed it was suspended.

Residents say the Bulwara Road bridge is notorious for accidents.

A Coles delivery truck and another Balmain Rentals truck both hit the overpass last year.
