Truck driver in a critical condition after serious crash, long delays building on major Melbourne freeway

Significant delays are building on a major Melbourne freeway after a serious crash brought down a light pole and left a driver with critical injuries.

All outbound lanes of the Monash Freeway are closed between Warrigal Road and Forster Road after a truck crashed into a barrier about 2.20pm.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital in a critical condition.

There are traffic delays of up to an hour on the freeway, stretching back past Toorak Road.

Motorists on the freeway are being directed off at Warrigal Road, where they can use the Princes Highway and Ferntree Gully to rejoin the freeway at Forster or Blackburn Roads.

Motorists heading home from work have been advised to exit the freeway as early as possible and head for Dandenong Road.

The freeway is expected to be closed for some time as emergency services assess the scene.
