Tropical Cyclone Owen forms off north Queensland coast
A cyclone has formed off the north Queensland coast but isn’t expected to pose a threat.
The Bureau of Meterology (BoM) has confirmed Tropical Cyclone Owen is about 545km north-east of Willis Island and 990km north-east of Cairns in the Coral Sea.
The Category 1 system will deepen overnight and could become a Category 2 tomorrow.
BoM Queensland State Manager Bruce Gunn said the cyclone was likely to move south-west but would remain offshore and weaken by Wednesday.
Premier Annastacia Palasczuk said authorities would monitor the cyclone, which could being some rain into parts of Central Queensland and the Wide Bay area.
She said authorities would take it one day at a time, and the bushfire crisis ravaging the state remained a concern.
