Triple the cuteness at Australian Reptile Park as koala mum looks after ‘triplets’

Koala triplets are the hot new attraction at the Australian Reptile Park, however it’s not all as it seems.

Jill, the proud mother of one of the koala joeys, has suddenly found her workload tripled after ‘adopting’ two other koala joeys to form one big happy koala family.

Australian Reptile Park general manager Tim Faulkner told 9NEWS the two bigger joeys joined Jill’s small koala family after their own mothers stopped producing milk.

“Koalas at about 10 months of age start to ween from their mum, eat eucalyptus, and then one day, they’ll leave mum,” he said.

“Because we keep groups of koalas in together, two joeys have decided to move over to another mum, Jill, who’s still got milk – now there’s three.”

Koala triplets are very rare in the wild, and a new mother will typically only ever have to look after one joey.   

It’s expected that the two older joeys will become independent in the next few weeks and move onto eating eucalyptus, meaning that Jill’s daughter will finally get her mother all to herself.
