Tributes pour in for popular motorcyclist killed in crash

A 59-year-old man killed in a motorcycle crash in Darwin's rural area has been remembered as a friendly man and experienced rider.

Richard 'Dick' Grylls was travelling inbound on the Stuart Highway when his Indian motorcycle crashed at the southern Gonnerman Road turnoff around 2pm yesterday.

"It appears when he left the road he's collided with the concrete guttering of the roadway and has catapulted across to the washout area,” Sergeant Shane Humphreys from NT Police told 9NEWS.

This morning, friends and family had begun laying flowers at the scene, as they came to terms with their loss.

"Dick was a great bloke,” friend Joe Walters said.

"He was friendly with a lot of people. Just was right into motorcycling in the Territory."

"I think there'll be a memorial ride. We're going to have to,” he added.

Another friend, who did not want to be identified, told 9NEWS Mr Grylls was an experienced motorcyclists who loved vintage bikes and that he was struggling to comprehend how the tragedy occurred.

Mr Grylls started restoring Indian motorcycles at the age of 12, and has owned more than a dozen over the years.

He was well-respected in the motorcycling community and had been part of numerous clubs and associations over the years.

Police are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash and are preparing a report for the coroner.
