A meeting of commonwealth and state treasurers won't go ahead next week.

Instead they will take part in a meeting with premiers on April 8, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull confirmed on Friday.

Treasurers last met in December to try to reach consensus on tax reform.

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen was scathing of the decision to cancel next week's meeting, saying it was not the first time.

"It sounds like the usual calm and methodical policy making that we're getting from this government," he told reporters in Sydney.

South Australian Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said the cancellation raised questions about the government's plans for tax reform.

"I'm getting very concerned that the commonwealth government does not have a plan for our tax system into the future," he said.

"I think it's very important that the treasurers come together and discuss tax reform and I'm not sure why Treasurer Morrison has cancelled that meeting."
