Treasurer to probe tax break for athletes

Treasurer Scott Morrison will be taking a closer look at a move mooted by the tax office that could give high-paid Australian sports stars a tax break.

The ATO has reportedly issued a draft guideline to allow professional athletes to divert up to 10 per cent of their income to a lower tax bracket to compensate them for their fame and image being used for promotional activity.

"My instincts on this is this is going to warrant a bit more attention," Mr Morrison told Melbourne's 3AW radio on Thursday.

While the ATO was responsible for administering tax law as they understand it, it's up to the federal government to set policy.

"I don't like there being loopholes in the tax system ... I'm not suggesting this is one, but I do think we'll be taking a close look at this."
