Treasurer Scott Morrison will start work on a new trade deal with the UK to start once its leaves the European Union.

Despite growing international anti-trade sentiments, Mr Morrison insists the Australian government is committed to building and strengthening trade relationships.

"As Brexit takes shape, the Australian government will work to maintain and improve the close investment relationship between Australia and the UK," he said on Sunday.

In a visit to London over the coming week, the treasurer will meet British officials to start laying the foundations for a new trade agreement.

He'll also promote Australia's financial technology industry at a G20 meeting in Germany looking at digitalisation and innovation in the sector, saying he believes Australia is well positioned to be at the forefront of the emerging space.

He will meet experts and entrepreneurs in the sector to learn how the UK is approaching technological changes.

Mr Morrison will also learn about the UK's affordable housing policies and see if they could be useful in Australia.
