Small business won't be able to get grants to help their workers build skills after the federal government scrapped a $119 million program in its mid-year budget update.

The Industry Skills Fund offered skills advice and training grants to micro, small and medium businesses.

Treasurer Scott Morrison said the fund had been under utilised and there was still a range of others grants and assistance available to businesses.

"We continue to provide support to business and individuals to train through a range of skills programs including the Australian apprenticeships incentives program, trade support loans and the VET student loans program," he told reporters in Canberra on Monday.

Any business that already has a grant approved will still get their money and applications for new grants will stay open until December 31.
