A train has struck a car at a level crossing in Melbourne's south-east.

The Frankston line train hit the red hatchback near Como Parade and Warrigal Road in Mentone just before 3pm.

Police said a woman in her 70s suffered a medical episode and drove onto the tracks inadvertently before her car was struck by the southbound train.
