A horror chain reaction crash has claimed the life of a 58-year-old Golden Grove motorbike rider on one of Adelaide's busiest roads.

The Commodore involved in the crash ploughed through a fence dividing lanes on South Road, striking the motorbike and two other vehicles in its path. Tragically, the motorcyclist was then hit by another car.

"The rider just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, which is the unfortunate thing," Motorcycle Riders Association's Ebi Lux said.

The driver allegedly responsible for the crash was drug tested at the scene and was later charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He was granted bail and is expected to appear in court in March.

In the wake of the tragedy, questions have been raised about the safety of the dividing fence on South Road.

Local resident Dion Szerwinski believes a concrete barrier would be a more effective safety measure.

"It's not good enough," Szerwinski said.

"It's got to be some sort of concrete barrier that separates the oncoming two-way traffic."

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens acknowledged the concerns but highlighted the rarity of such incidents.

"I don't recall an incident of this type, where a vehicle has crossed a wide median strip and collided with oncoming traffic," Stevens said.

"But that's not to say there shouldn't be a review of road infrastructure."

Tributes have poured in for the motorcyclist, the second fatal motorcycle accident in South Australia this year.
