Toxic tuna could have been from handling

A bout of food poisoning linked to tuna at a Sydney city cafe is possibly due to mishandling in Australia.

The NSW Food Authority tested 21 cans of John Bull Tuna supplied to the Soul Origin cafe and found they were not contaminated, supplier FTA Food Solutions said.

FTA Food Solutions and ISA Value Co also carried out their own tests, with the same result.

"All test results, official and independent, have indicated that the batch of tuna in question was not responsible for the recent food poisoning," FTA Food Solutions director Rob Burgess said.

The Seven Network says the cans from Thailand are in the clear and the NSW Food Authority believe the issue with the seafood is local, and not from imported food.

In late February, seven people developed symptoms of the potentially fatal scombroid poisoning after eating tuna from the Soul Origin cafe.

The NSW Food Authority has been contacted for comment.
