A Sydney townhouse has been gutted by a fire that erupted earlier this morning, forcing a street closure.

The blaze began at a house on Park Road in Auburn in the city's west, just before 6am.

Firefighters have managed to contain and control the blaze, but Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Newberry said the house had sustained some structural damage.

Firefighters are currently checking neighbouring houses for any damage, and investigators will seek to establish the cause of the fire.

No injuries have been reported.

One of the family living at the home told 9News the television had "started blowing up" after it was turned on that morning.

Dewberry said traffic would face continued obstructions on Park Road and urged drivers to find an alternate route.
