Tourist filmed driving on wrong side of Victorian road

Shocking dash-cam video has emerged of a tourist driving into oncoming traffic near one of Victoria’s most popular routes.

The footage captured by Shanan Greenhough shows a silver car coming towards his vehicle in Torquay, near the iconic Great Ocean Road.

While Mr Greenhough avoided injury, he told The Herald Sun he reported the near-miss to police, who told him the offending car was hired from Tullamarine Airport.

The incident comes just months after the state government announced the installation of multi-lingual signs along the Great Ocean Road for international tourists.

Messages are displayed in Mandarin and English, and can be used to show up to 25 different road alerts.

“It’s a simple idea but it will have a huge impact on safety for everyone that uses the Great Ocean Road,” Minister for Roads and Safety Luke Donnellan said in September.

An estimated seven million people visit the Great Ocean Road each year, with the highest proportion of tourists coming from China.
