A total fire ban has been declared for southern Tasmania with dry and hot weather to hit the state.

Parts of the state's south will reach the mid to high 30s over the next few days as a heatwave hits southern Australia.

The Tasmania Fire Service has declared a total fire ban for the state's south for Tuesday.

Acting deputy chief officer Jeremy Smith said any fire outbreak could be difficult to control given the predicted dry and hot weather.

"The weather is likely to remain warm for the remainder of the week and will dry off much of the vegetation across the landscape," he said in a statement.
