Tornado captured spinning through regional South Australia

An apparent tornado has been captured spinning through a field in regional South Australia as wild weather hits most of Australia.

Keen weather watcher Meagan Halwes shot the moment it formed in Hamley Bridge on Monday.

Halwes was on her way to help her mum move sandbags when she stopped.

"I was so excited. I absolutely love tornadoes, they're an incredible force of nature and you don't expect to see one here," she said.

"So to actually see one let alone capture it on film was incredible."

It cut a path across the landscape for about 10 minutes but didn't cause any damage.

9news.com.au has reached out to the Bureau of Meteorology about the phenomenon.

It comes as a volatile weather system bears down on Australia's east coast, aggravating flooding in NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

The bureau warned heavy rainfall will hit South Australia today.

"In South Australia, another low and trough is bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms with some heavy falls to eastern parts of South Australia," the bureau said.

Later in the week another weak trough is forecast to pass over South Australia bringing showers and possible storms.

"Rainfall totals of 25 to 50 mm are likely across south-east South Australia," the bureau said.
