Top journalism gong winners unveiled

An investigation into Chinese interference in Australian politics has taken out Victoria's top journalistic gong at the annual Quill awards.

The joint ABC Four Corners and Fairfax Media collaboration won the 2017 Gold Quill in Melbourne on Friday night for exposing China's reach into major political parties.

Investigative Age newspaper reporters Nick McKenzie and Richard Baker jointly took out the 2017 Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award following stories about Chinese activities in Australia, which led to the resignation of former Labor senator Sam Dastyari.

Meanwhile, the Australian's Will Swanton was named the Harry Gordon Australian Sports Journalist of the Year for work including his piece on champion mare Winx.

Other winners across more than 30 categories included the Age newsroom, Seven News, the Herald Sun and 3AW for coverage of the deadly 2017 Bourke Street massacre.
