Top barrister to oversee anti-terror laws

A top barrister has been appointed to independently monitor the application of Australia's national security and anti-terrorism laws.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced the appointment of James Renwick SC on Friday for an initial 12 month period until arrangements are made for a permanent role.

Dr Renwick will oversee how the legislation is applied in accordance with the rule of law and human rights obligations.
