Marriage equality campaigner Frances Abbott has celebrated the success of the yes campaign by getting engaged to her boyfriend of two weeks.

The 26-year-old daughter of former prime minister Tony Abbott, who campaigned against same-sex marriage, announced her engagement to Sam Loch, an Olympics rower, via Instagram on Sunday.

"Hey Feyonce, Two weeks was all it took to know that forever with you was a mighty fine idea," she said with series of photobooth pictures with Loch, followed by a series of enthusiastic hashtags.

Labor leader Bill Shorten congratulated Ms Abbott, "and in particular her fellow, he sounds like a very lucky fellow", on the TODAY Show this morning.

He also passed on some of his wedding wisdom.

"A couple of bits of life coaching, one, if you’re going to have the wedding get Albo (Labor MP Anthony Albanese) to be the DJ, and maybe you’ll get Pyney (Liberal MP Christopher Pyne) in to, I don’t know, help with the arrangements…" he said with a laugh.

"I just want to remind Frances, weddings are never about you and your beau, they’re about your mum and your dad. So as long as you do what Margie and Tony say on the wedding, you’ll have a super wedding, and I’m sure they’ll be pleased too."
