Zac Bailey has been doing a stellar job filling in as the Today sports host while Danica is on leave.

The 9News Sydney journalist is used to covering the latest sports stories for the 6pm bulletin.

But even with a 3.30am wake-up for his hosting duties alongside Karl, Sarah and Jayne this week, Zac nailed the early starts, all while maintaining his trademark big smile.

And now, Today viewers know why.

It turns out Zac is a big old mumma's boy, with Vicki Bailey happy to help her son prepare for his early starts.

From packing Zac's Bluey lunchbox, to ironing his shirts and even driving him to work in time for hair and make-up, there's nothing Ms Bailey won't do for her boy.

"Zac, all week you've been talking about how much of a mummy's boy you are, but we didn't really believe him, though," Karl said.

"So I decided to sneak down to the carpark and grab some vision of you arriving at work."

And sure enough there was Vicki giving Zac a kiss on the forehead and wishing him a good day in the office.

So Karl decided to invite her upstairs into the studio to meet the rest of the team.

Vicki played along, although she did still make time to finish ironing Zac's workshirts and duck out to the shops to grab the ingredients to make his favourite lamb cutlets for tea tonight.

"She only lives five minutes down the road from me, it'd be silly not to bring my laundry around," Zac said.

"Mum, you get cooking with the lamb cutlets, I'll read some sport and then we'll all give them a try."
