'Not unusual': Ley plays down leadership threat as rivals dine out

Federal Opposition leader Sussan Ley has downplayed any threat to her leadership of the Coalition in the wake of an increasingly intense internal debate about energy policy.

After their electoral drubbing earlier this year, moderate Ley, who was narrowly elected as Liberal Party leader over right-faction Angus Taylor, has declared an end to captain's calls and said policy would be decided in the party room.

But cracks are showing over the Coalition's approach to net zero.

The junior party, the Nationals, have now voted to dump it as policy, putting pressure on Ley's ultimate decision.

She told Today that the party was still doing the work to build an energy policy, listening to workers and experts.

"I believe that we cannot have net zero at any cost. I said when I became leader, we would develop an energy policy delivered a stable, reliable grid play our part responsibly in reducing emissions," she said.

As for recent photos capturing senior conservatives such as Taylor and ex-shadow frontbencher Andrew Hastie dining together in Canberra, Ley shrugged it off.

"It's not unusual and it's something we do all the time," she said.
