Today co-host Tom Steinfort found himself blaming chopped onions after an on-air interview with a street poet brought him to the edge of tears.

Gold Coast man Darren Hill has written for more than 100 people since he set up a sign by a footpath asking strangers if he could write them a poem.

“I think it’s part of the experience when I hear someone’s story and the stories are wild, like everything from fires to nurses to single mums to people sleeping in their cars,” he told Today.

“It’s quite extraordinary to get that cross-section of humanity and then try and turn it into some meaningful words.”

Darren then revealed he’d written a piece for proud “girl dad” Tom.

You can watch him read it in the player above - and Tom’s heartfelt and nearly tearful reaction as he declared the poem “beautiful”.
