One of Australia's most iconic rock bands of the 90s will be releasing new material in the near future.

Spiderbait lead singer and drummer Mark 'Kram' Maher confirmed the news on Today Extra while promoting the bands current tour 'Tour in the Key of J', a celebration of bass guitarist and bandmate Janet English's songs over the past three decades.

"We talked to the label about doing a new record, they wanted us to do different play lists and unbeknownst to us we were super popular on Spotify," Kram told Today Extra.

"We were like that's really cool, so we did some lists and one of the ones that came up was just all of Janet's songs in a row without me interrupting her basically."

The gigs performed so far have been a big hit and Kram said while Janet was reluctant to be featured so heavily on the double album, the response to the record from fans has been amazing.

"A lot of kids haven't seen us play before. It's good to be playing music and we will keep going as long as we can," he said.

Spiderbait are behind bangers including 1997's 'Calypso', 1999's 'Stevie' and the 2004 chart topper 'Black Betty', a cover of the 1977 version of the song with Kram himself behind the lead vocals.

And while the band are happy to continue performing their hits live with each other for fans old and new, Kram said he was excited about creating new music soon.

"There will be new Spiderbait material coming out in the future," he said.
