As southeast Queenslanders begin to assess the damage left behind by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, one Gold Coast local got a lot more than he bargained for when he spotted a bull shark circling the city's canal system.

Nick Atkins has been an unofficial ambassador to the Gold Coast during this week's wild weather.
He told Today he was tipped off by a group of tradies who said the shark had been circling the canals for an hour and he just had to see for himself.
