Family of teen killed in speeding crash angered driver's short sentence won't be appealed

The father of a teen killed in a crash on Queensland's Sunshine Coast last year said he "feels dead on the inside" after learning the learner driver behind the wheel's short sentence won't be appealed.

Ryan Kimball was just 16 when the car he was a passenger in slammed into a power pole at high speed in Bli Bli last June.

The 17-year-old driver entered an early plea of guilty and was handed a conditional release order immediately after being sentenced to 18 months detention.

Ryan's grieving family were dealt a fresh blow when they found out the Attorney General would not appeal the light sentence, with his father Graeme telling Today communication throughout the entire ordeal "has been shocking".

"We just feel really let down by everything that has transpired ever since Ryan's death," Graeme said.

"There doesn't seem to be any emphasis on the families and we are really let down with the appeal because we feel there was no justice served for Ryan."

Graeme said he knows his family's tragedy will not be the last as youth crime in Queensland continues to grow and law reforms need to happen to hold young offenders accountable.

"After we first heard Ryan's killer's sentence, I lay in bed for three days and I didn't move," he said.

"Every day I wake up now and you hear about tragedy after tragedy and a lot involve young juveniles and there is no deterrents in place.

"There has to be a change to stop this, this carnage is getting out of the out of control."
