It will be 'very hard to forgive' Russia, Zelenskyy tells Aussie students

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke to a group of Australian university students via video-link overnight, and was served up one of the hardest questions he's ever faced.

ANU Chancellor Julie Bishop, a former Foreign Minister, said a QUT student asked Zelenskyy whether Russia and Ukraine could ever be on good terms again.

"He thought about it for a long time, and then said quite sadly that he couldn't see a situation where Russia and Ukraine could be friends again because every family in Ukraine had lost something," Bishop told Today.

"They have all suffered and it would be very hard to forgive. Now, the world is concerned that there is no end game, that we can't see a negotiated cease-fire let alone a peace settlement.

"And he certainly called on nations to not support any kind of peace settlement that was based on appeasing President Putin and Russia."
