What Rebecca Black really thinks of that viral 2011 song 'Friday'

Whether you loved it or hated it, most people can sing at least some of the lyrics to the 2011 pop song "Friday".

The surprise hit catapulted then 13-year-old Rebecca Black to international stardom and has earned her an all new following in today's LGBTQI community.

While Black faced some backlash in the years following the release of 'Friday', with the teen even being the target of bullying, she told Today Extra she is grateful for the audience she has built from the song.

"I put out a remix for the 10-year anniversary where I completely remade the song and made it my own," Black told Today Extra.

"It was such an opportunity to reclaim it - the remix goes so hard and the amount of people who have come up to me, the queer people within my audience who resonate with me, I find something really special in the way that we have all come through this."

Black said she feels fortunate to have found a space and an audience that allows her to be herself, share queer music and be open about her own experiences.

While in Australia, the now 25-year-old will be speaking at Big Sound about how much the music industry and internet have evolved over the past decade.

"It was something that I didn't necessarily expect to be such a major part of 10 years ago, but I definitely have a lot to say on it," she said.
