What new pope really said after receiving iconic Aussie gift

Pope Leo XIV has made history delivering his first Sunday blessings to thousands of the faithful in Saint Peter's Square.

Marist brother Mark O'Connor from the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta was present at the first US pope's event, after gifting the Catholic leader Tim Tams just a few weeks ago.

And while it's been revealed the pope loved the gift, which included the iconic Aussie biscuits, Tim Tams, O'Connor revealed what His Holiness said in response.

"I brought him a present, you know, that's the nice Australian thing to do and as I handed the present to him wrapped up, he said, 'I hope that's not Vegemite,'" O'Connor laughed.

O'Connor said Pope Leo, formerly known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, has visited Australia several times during his work with the church, but has never acquired a liking for the savoury dark spread.

"But he loves the Tim Tams and he had a slight, you know, wry smile - he's a lovely, delightful human being," he said.

"Just a lovely, gracious, humble man - very different in style from Pope Francis, but with essentially the same vision."
