'Entirely predictable': Piers Morgan slams California Government's response to firestorm

Emergency crews in Los Angeles are bracing for more extreme weather as multiple wildfires continues to threaten communities across the city.

Piers Morgan owns a property in Beverly Hills and like so many others, he is nervously watching as the intense blaze draws nearer and nearer.

But as more details emerge into what caused these deadly fires to overrun the city, the controversial media commentator has called out a "catastrophic lack of leadership" by LA authorities.

"You look at every part of the leadership here, whether it be Mayor Karen Bass, whether you look at Governor Gavin Newsom, the way the fire department has been run and you just see a collective failure to protect the people of Los Angeles from what was entirely predictable," Morgan told Today's Karl Stefanovic.

"I've had a hard say for 15 years, if you ever spend more than three weeks in LA, there's bound to be some kind of fire and the people knew that if you got the wrong moment with the Santa Ana winds, then this kind of thing could potentially happen.

"Why did the people who are entrusted and elected to protect the people, why didn't they see it coming and do something to prevent it?"

Even with LA facing more bouts of extreme weather, Governor Newsom has signed various executive orders to 'support the recovery efforts for thousands of Californians impacted by the firestorm".

In a statement released by the Governor's Office, Newsom confirmed "the road ahead will be difficult", but has proposed a US$2.5 billion relief fund.

"We are using the full force of the state government to respond to the Los Angeles firestorms and ensure recovery for the thousands of residents who have been impacted by this unimaginable loss," he said.
