A service station attendant said it was "pretty wild" when a koala wandered into his Adelaide store and decided to mount him while he was on shift.

Nick Smith was working at the Ampol store in Adelaide Hills when the friendly marsupial crawled through the automatic doors and decided to come say hello at the front counter.

He told Today he was glad the koala didn't claw anywhere sensitive under his jeans and said when he and his co-worker did eventually manage to coax it off him, it decided it wasn't done with the cute encounter.

"He just jumped off of us and just wanders around and yeah, he was just wandering the around the store for about 40-minutes until koala rescue came and took him away," he said.

Today host Karl Stefanovic couldn't pass the opportunity up to take the mickey out of his guest and asked him a delicate question about the koala encounter.

"Were you bit concerned you may catch something and have to try to explain it to your partner?" Karl asked.

"It was definitely running through my head," Nick answered.

Karl's co-host Sarah Abo was shocked he got away with asking that kind of question on morning television, but admitted catching chlamydia during your shift would have been hard to explain.

"A koala came into the store and I got chlamydia - I don't know whether that one would be believable," she said.
