King Charles III to host 'value for money' Coronation amid cost of living crisis

After a tough few months for the British Royal family following the release of Prince Harry's damning memoir and he and Meghan Markle's Netflix docuseries, more details have been revealed on King Charles III's Coronation.

The royal event on May 6 will be much more scaled back than Queen Elizabeth II's 1953 Coronation, as the UK - like other parts of the Commonwealth - suffer through one of the worst financial crises in recent history.

UK Telegraph Associate Editor Camilla Tominey told Today the slimmed down event would benefit the British Royal's image in the public eye.

"After criticism of the King and the Prince of Wales in Spare, they have taken a battering in the approval ratings, not as bad as Harry and Meghan but this is one way of winning the public over," Tominey said.

The scaled back Coronation will see between 2000 and 3000 guests in attendance - compared to the 8000 Queen Elizabeth II had and will need to be "value for money", she said.

"By the time the ceremony comes in May, people have skyrocketing energy bills, paying more for fuel - I think the King decided he needs to give back to the people at a time when, of course, people's purse strings are tight."
