It's been 22 years since the hit song, Not Pretty Enough, catapulted Aussie country star Kasey Chambers onto the international stage, but the message behind the song is just as powerful today.

Co-written and produced by Chambers' brother Nash, it was the third single off her second studio album, Barricades and Brick Walls and won Chambers multiple awards.

But even after all these years, Chambers told Today she still gets emotional when she performs Not Pretty Enough.

"I wrote that song at a time when I was really new in the music industry and I felt very out of place, I didn't look like the other girls and I didn't sound like them and I just felt a bit lost," she said.

"And then I sat down and I wrote that song, not even thinking I would probably ever play it to another person and then it became this breakthrough song for me and I think a lot of it was to do with the fact that women, a lot of young girls, felt like that and felt invisible and felt all these things, which is so true today.

"But it's a beautiful thing because now when I get to play that song on stage, it starts out from such a vulnerable place for me and I still get choked up and feel that lonely feeling that I felt when I first wrote that song, but then the audience will start singing and all of a sudden I feel like I'm just so supported and I feel like I'm just not alone anymore."

That emotion was evident as Chambers sat across from Karl and Sarah, with the Today hosts jumping up to give her a big hug as she wiped tears from her eyes.

"We are sorry sweetheart, but we should say thank you because of what you've been able to do for so many of us," Sarah assured her guest.

With a new song, new album and memoir out this week, Chambers said she is ready to hit the road again after a long break.

But she revealed her new memoir was originally something personal she was doing for herself.

"I actually started out just writing down a bunch of these lessons that I'd learned in my life, that I was just trying to live by every day, personally, little things to remind myself to be vulnerable at the times that I need to and learn to say no and things like that," she said.

"And it was more just for me to personally read and then it started evolving into a book.

"I sat in a room on my own and did it right from that real, deep, creative, vulnerable place inside me and actually, this was more like making an album, I think."

Chambers' new memoir is out now and her new album, Backbone, is out Friday
