Karl Stefanovic has returned Today to talk about season two of his show, This Time Next Year.

Stefanovic joined hosts Georgie Gardner and Deb Knight from Hawaii, where he is on assignment for 60 Minutes.

"Can you just make it sound a little less exotic where I'm joining you from?" Stefanovic laughed. "Something like downtown Honolulu."

Stefanovic is back in the hosting chair next week with This Time Next Year. The show, he said, has been a life changing experience for him.

The former Today anchor was "completely and utterly blown away" by the people he encountered in this season of the show, which follows the journey of everyday Australians as they pledge to transform their lives.

"To sit there and to watch it all unfold was a real honour for me," Karl said. "I know a lot of people go through a lot in life, but when you see these people go through what they have and what they try to achieve in a year, it puts a whole lot of things in perspective."

As emotional as Stefanovic says this season is, it also has its funny moments. "There's 101-year-old lady, she comes out and she wants to fly a plane. The only drama is she's got a few eye sight issues and a hearing problem," he laughs.

Although he hosts the show, Stefanovic says he is actually not privy to participants' journey throughout the year. "I don't know when they come out originally, and I don't know when they come out through the doors at the end what has happened.  It's a big surprise for me," he said.

"I was a little bit worried about the 101-year-old!"

This Time Next Year Season 2 premieres Monday, August 12 at 8:40pm on Nine. You can catch up on Season 1 right now at 9Now.
