Legendary Australian singer John Farnham is doing "OK" and is recovering well after battling a recent chest infection, Nine's Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins has revealed.

Appearing on the Today show to discuss a new authorised documentary about Farnham's life, Wilkins said the famed singer was taking strength from thousands of well wishes.

"John is doing OK. He had this chest infection off the back of the tumour removal out of his mouth but he is doing OK, under medical supervision on the road to recovery," Wilkins said.

"But it is a long road. Thankfully they found the damn thing before it got any worse.

"John is so buoyed by the love and support, set this website up where people can leave support and messages for him. He knows how much affection and love there is for him."

The 73-year-old singer has been receiving ongoing treatment, care and rehabilitation over the past few months following his successful surgery to remove mouth cancer.

He was admitted to hospital in late March following a respiratory infection.

Farnham has been a mainstay of Australian entertainment since he was billed as teen idol "Johnny Farnham" in the late 1960s.

The 73-year-old's 1986 album Whispering Jack, featuring the single You're The Voice, remains the second-highest selling album in Australia, behind only Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell (1977).

He has received 19 ARIA awards, and was named an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1996, and Australian of the Year in 1987.
