As the world watches on in horror as the Israel-Hamas crisis escalates, Karl Stefanovic has called out the reaction of a select few on Australia's very own shores.

Police are investigating after a pro-Palestine rally on the steps of the Sydney Opera House this week took a disturbing turn, with some people yelling anti-Semitic chants.

"What we saw on the weekend is nothing short of one of the most barbaric acts of terrorism the world has ever seen, that's a fact," the Today host said.

"But, what we saw on the steps of the Opera House was something entirely different - it is is something I will be honest, I have struggled to reconcile.

"I found it so incredibly disturbing, so I was asking myself, how can this be modern Australia? It doesn't feel like it's us."

Karl called it cruel that Jewish Australians were told to stay home instead of mourn at the iconic Sydney site, while anti-Semites yelled and spread hate at the location.

"It's real and it's a problem," Karl said.

"Our authorities have said that kind of behaviour has no place legally or morally in our country, now it is beholden upon them to stop it from happening again - they must act - they must lead.
