Hero cop who scaled balcony to put fire out 'just doing his job'

A Queensland police officer who scaled a balcony to put out a fire said he "was just doing his job".

Constable Alex Campbell was conducting enquiries at a property in Ingham when he told Today he noticed flames out the corner of his eye.

"I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," he said.

"Just as we were leaving I noticed there was a blaze up on the balcony, so I quickly walked towards the house and instead of walking through the actual dwelling, I thought I may as well climb up the outside while my partners were getting fire extinguishers and hoses."

Campbell's brave actions may also have avoided disaster after he discovered there was actually a woman inside the house at the time.

"I'd hate to think what would have happened if we just left the address without noticing that the blaze was happening," he said.

"It could have potentially caused a lot of damage and the house could have burned down."

Footage from the officer's bodycam shows how quickly he was able to get to the fire and put it out with an extinguisher his offsider threw to him.

Campbell has been dubbed a "real life Spiderman" based off the vision, but he brushed off any talk of him being called a hero.

"I don't know if hero is the right word, I was just doing my job," he said.

"I just want to go to work and help people, that's my main goal every day."
