Viral sensation unrecognisable in new music video

It's been 12 years since Rebecca Black's pop anthem Friday was released and as catchy as it was, listeners either love it or hate it.

While many panned the infectious track when it first came out - particularly after Black's parents paid a record label to produce it and film the music video - it made the 14-year-old an overnight viral sensation.

And she told Today Extra she is "grateful for her unconventional start" in the industry.

"I have been doing this since I was a teenager and I love my audience," she said.

And while Black has maintained that audience and continued performing since the release of Friday, it was only this year that she chose to release her debut studio album, Let Her Burn.

And the Rebecca Black who is bringing her Let Her Burn Tour Down Under next month is a far cry from the teen pop star from 2011.

"Things have changed a lot, I think with the people who have ridden with me and who have come to my shows these last few years," she said.

"(Friday) is a very important parent of my show, it is a song that we celebrate together, I redefined it in 2021 with the anniversary release with a whole new version of the song and I love to play that."

In recent years, Black has built a strong following among the LGBTQI community and she will be performing at Summer Camp Festival in the first week of December.

"What I have been through, I have learned that honesty about myself and what I find exciting and invigorating and true to myself has connected me with so many people that I never imagined could be done and I am just grateful to have the audience that I have," she said.
