'Why is it so many people don't like Scott Morrison?': Ally grills Dutton

A dip in polls just weeks out from a Federal Election suggests Labor are clear favourites when Australia heads to the voting booths in May.

The government has continually talked up it's 'world-leading' response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and how it has eased Australia through the crisis.

If that is the case, Ally asked Peter Dutton, why is it so many people don't like Scott Morrison?

"It's a pretty unforgiving business in the modern age – when you provide support people say: 'thanks for that but what's next?' and it's hard to meet that expectation and I can tell you during the course of the pandemic the Prime Minister worked day and night to take our country through it," Mr Dutton replied.

"When you look overseas there are tens of thousands more deaths than we would have experienced in Australia had we not made the decisions we have, I honestly believe in terms of national security there is no way in the world Labor can put forward a compelling argument at the next election that they would make Australia safer than what the coalition can."

Ally also quizzed Mr Dutton about the bullying allegations against Mr Morrison.

"We are staring down a trillion-dollar debt at the moment and a lot of people are focused on what the election will be about – it will be about character – so when you've got leaks within your own camp that Scott Morrison is a bully – is the Prime Minister a problem?" Ally asked.

Mr Dutton said the Australian leader was "not a problem" and "The Government is more focussed on keeping Australia safe and helping people provide for their families".

"Yes, there is a debt but without that, tens of thousands of businesses would have gone under over the course of COVID-19," he said.

"700,000 jobs were saved because of JobKeeper and the decisions that we made to close the border early on they were all the right decisions for our country."
