How you can save $1500 on your yearly grocery bill

It's no secret Aussie families are struggling when it comes to their weekly grocery shop.

But with the cost of living crisis not going away anytime soon, there is one simple thing families are doing to slash their shopping bill.

Cross shopping involves visiting multiple competing supermarkets to find the best deal on those kitchen and household staples.

It does mean putting a bigger effort into the weekly shop, but it can be worth it when it comes to softening the blow on your bank account.

"I call it cheating on your supermarket and I've been saying for years we should all be cheating on our supermarket," Today money expert, Joel Gibson said.

"I've worked out that if you have a $300 weekly grocery bill, you'll save around $1500 a year by shopping at more than one supermarket."

In fact, the latest data from Coles and Woolworths shows cross shoppers are actually using up to eight retailers to get their weekly groceries.

But if that sounds like too much effort for those of you strapped for time, Joel said there is an easy way to simplify the task.

"Online shopping is up by over 20 per cent at both Coles and Woollies and home brands are obviously becoming more popular," he said.

"There aren't as many discounts, but they're getting bigger, so people are really taking advantage of this because when you're shopping online, you can have a Coles tab open, an Amazon tab open and a Chemist Warehouse tab open."
