Crocodile Dundee fans in for incredible treat almost 40 years on

Almost four decades ago, the world was introduced to a true Australian masterpiece.

And Crocodile Dundee remains not only the highest grossing film of all time in Australia, but the highest grossing Australian film globally.

Australian film and television icon Delvene Delany's late husband John Cornell, produced and co-wrote Crocodile Dundee and she told Today, while Paul Hogan is the face of Mick Dundee, a lot of incredible people worked behind the scenes to make it such a special film.

"Paul's had the spotlight for 40 years as that incredible character, but there were so many other people involved in making that magic," she said.

And that is why Delvene has teamed up with media executive Victoria Baldock to create new documentary Love of an Icon: The Legend of Crocodile Dundee.

"This documentary is to honour them, not only for my beautiful late husband, John, but also for Russell Boyd, the cinematographer, Peter Feinman, the director, Peter Best, the composer and everybody else who added their spark," she said.

The new project involved sifting through hours and hours of never-before seen footage from the shoot and behind the scenes magic, which Delvene's husband had in storage.

Victoria said it was "an incredible honour" to be trusted with looking through all the archival material.

"We'd open a box and it would be like goosebumps, it'd be gold - everything was gold," she said.

"It was just incredible and it's a testament to John's brilliance.

"Ultimately, Crocodile Dundee is a simple love story, it's a joy and you still finish that film and walk out feeling amazing."

An encore 4K cut of the film will be released on May 8 and Love of an Icon: The Legend of Crocodile Dundee documentary is in cinemas from tmorrow.
